Bob Flanagan was a performance artist, writer, musician and actor born in New York City in 1952. Flanagan was known for his provocative and often shocking performance pieces that frequently dealt with his own chronic illnesses and physical pain, and often sought to confront cultural taboos surrounding disability, disease and sexuality. He died in 1996 at the age of 43 due to complications related to cystic fibrosis.
