Emilio Fernández was a Mexican film director, screenwriter, and actor known for his contributions to the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. He won the Best Director award at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival for his film María Candelaria. He acted in over 40 films and directed 18. Fernández was also known for his rugged good looks and charismatic onscreen presence.
