James Gregory (1638-1675) was a Scottish mathematician and astronomer who is credited with developing the first practical reflecting telescope. His work in geometry and calculus also laid the groundwork for the study of calculus of variations. He was a professor at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland until his death at age 36.
