Jay Silverheels was a Native American actor known for his role as Tonto in the Lone Ranger television series and films. He was also a lacrosse player and served in the military before pursuing his acting career. Silverheels worked to break stereotypes of Native Americans in Hollywood and was a prominent figure in the Native American community until his death in 1980.
