John Newton (1725-1807) was an Anglican clergyman and former slave trader who became a prominent abolitionist and hymn writer. His conversion to Christianity led him to renounce his participation in the African slave trade and he became an advocate for the abolition of the practice. His most famous hymn is "Amazing Grace."
