John Wesley (1703-1791) was an Anglican cleric and Christian theologian who co-founded the Methodist movement with his brother Charles Wesley. He traveled extensively throughout England, preaching and organizing small groups called societies. Wesley's energetic and charismatic preaching attracted thousands of followers and he became a prominent leader in the religious revival known as the Great Awakening. His influence extended beyond England to the United States and other countries, making him one of the most significant figures in Protestantism.
