Joseph Papp was an American theatrical producer and director, known for his work with the New York Shakespeare Festival, which he founded in 1954. He is credited with revitalizing American theater and bringing it to a wider audience through his innovative productions and free performances in public spaces. Papp died in 1991, but his legacy continues through the Public Theater, which he also founded.
