Mark O'Brien was an American journalist, poet and advocate for disabled people. Despite being paralyzed from the neck down due to polio, he earned a degree in English and went on to write articles and essays for publications such as The Washington Post and The New York Times. He is best known for his autobiographical essay "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate" and the subsequent film "The Sessions", in which he was portrayed by actor John Hawkes.
