Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She is best known for her memoir, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which recounts her early life of trauma and racism. She was also a celebrated poet and a recipient of numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Angelou passed away in 2014 at the age of 86.
