Melvin Van Peebles was an American actor, director, screenwriter, playwright, novelist, and composer known for his pioneering work in the Black independent film movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He was best known for directing and starring in the 1971 film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. He passed away on September 21, 2021 at the age of 89.
