Papa João Paulo II, born Karol Wojtyla, was the head of the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and was known for his conservative views on social issues and his charismatic personality. He traveled extensively throughout his papacy, visiting over 120 countries.
