He is best known for his documentaries that explore the history, politics, and culture of Chile, including The Battle of Chile, Salvador Allende, and Nostalgia for the Light. Guzmán has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Documentary Association.
