Samantha Smith (1972-1985) was an American student and peace activist who gained international fame in 1983 after writing a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, expressing her hopes for peace between the United States and the Soviet Union. Andropov responded with an invitation for Samantha to visit the Soviet Union, which she did in 1983, and which resulted in positive media attention and increased dialogue between the two countries. Sadly, Samantha died in a plane crash in 1985 at the age of 13.
