Vito Russo was an American LGBT activist, film historian and author. He is best known for his book "The Celluloid Closet," which explored Hollywood's portrayal of LGBT people in film. Russo also co-founded the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and was a prominent AIDS activist until his death in 1990.
